Mission

THE MISSION

ABOUT THE MISSION

"TO HOLD AS 'TWERE THE MIRROR UNTO NATURE." - HAMLET, III, II

THE MIRROR GOALS

I. To present works of classical performing art that play in alternating repertory and to operate in a manner that is both economically and artistically successful.

II. To develop an exciting, vivacious ensemble that preserves and advances the various classical art forms of theater, music, and dance by utilizing their centuries-long traditions of techniques, history, and styles in order to perform artistically demanding repertories.

THE MIRROR PRECEPTS

I. Present classics of all periods and places, including those of today and tomorrow.

“We cancel our Experience. This is an American habit.” - Clifford Odets

II. Select seasons that will provoke active thought.

“In these days when the churches are empty, there is nowhere except the theatre where matters can be properly debated as the Greeks debated them: matters of supreme importance, moral concern with great events and the motive behind them.”  - Kenneth Tynan

III. Formulate work that reveals life-positive, unifying ideas and promotes the holistic health of performer and audience.

“Man already prevails, but will he survive? He must go beyond the concern necessary for his own survival to that required for all other living creatures— to what Albert Schweitzer called 'reverence for life.'” - Laurance S. Rockefeller

IV. Create breathtaking art.

“The world is deep, and deeper than the day could read. Deep is it woe—But joy— Deeper still than grief can ever be!” - Friedrich Nietzsche
